A curated selection of approximately twelve verses from Ve:da:ntha De:sika's hundred-verse Daya Sathakam in which Dhaya: — the mercy of the Lord — is contemplated specifically as the form of Sri: Herself. The full Daya Sathakam personifies the Lord's mercy as a goddess and contemplates Her at length; the verses selected here are those in which De:sika makes the identification explicit — Dhaya: is the purushaka:ra by which the Lord's stern dharma is transformed into the saving grace through which the prapanna is rescued.

The Daya Sathakam — Ve:da:ntha De:sika's hundred-verse contemplation of the mercy of Lord Sri:niva:sa at Tirumala — is one of the supreme theological compositions of the post-Ra:ma:nuja Samprada:ya. The work personifies Dhaya: as a goddess and traces Her operations through every kind of samsa:ric distress: the soul caught in birth and death, the prapanna who has surrendered yet doubts, the disciple who has failed in his discipline, the householder swept by passion and grief. Verse by verse, De:sika asks Dhaya: to relent. The Samprada:ya commentators have long recognized that De:sika's Dhaya: is not a separate dhevatha: but Maha:lakshmi: Herself in Her aspect as the saving mercy of the Lord — the purushaka:ra contemplated as a quality made personal.

The twelve verses selected here are those in which De:sika makes the identification of Dhaya: with Sri: most explicit — verses in which the goddess of mercy is named with epithets that belong to Maha:lakshmi:, contemplated as seated upon the Lord's chest, addressed as the Mother through whom alone the Lord's stern dharma is transformed into saving grace. For the prapanna, this is the Daya Sathakam's deepest teaching: the mercy by which the Lord accepts the surrender is the Mother Herself. Daya Sathakam verse 1

प्रपद्ये तं गिरिं प्रायः श्रीनिवासानुकम्पया। इक्षुसारस्रवन्त्येव यन्मूर्त्या शर्करायितम्॥

I take refuge in that Hill (Thirumala:) which, through the compassion of Sri:niva:sa, has become as it were sugar crystallized from a flowing stream of cane-juice — the very embodiment of divine sweetness.

Meaning

The mangala:charana of the Daya Sathakam. Ve:da:ntha De:sika opens not by addressing Dhaya: directly but by taking refuge in Thirumala: — the Hill that is itself the crystallized form of the Lord's compassion. The image is doctrinally precise: the Hill is solid, visible, accessible, because the Lord's Dhaya: (whose form is Sri:) chose to take shape there. Every sloka that follows will unfold from this opening.

Daya Sathakam verse 2

विगाहे तीर्थबहुलां शीतलां गुरुसन्ततिम्। पूर्वाचार्यपदाम्भोजप्रभावामृतनिर्झराम्॥

I enter into the cool lineage rich in thi:rthas — the river of pu:rva:cha:ryas — which flows as a cascade of nectar from the influence of the lotus-feet of the prior teachers.

Meaning

Before contemplating Dhaya:, De:sika bows to the guru-parampara:. The a:cha:ryas are thi:rthas — sources of sacred water — and their influence is itself a continuous flow of nectar. In Sri:vaishnavism no contemplation of the Mother is possible without first taking refuge in the lineage that transmits Her grace.

Daya Sathakam verse 3

वन्दे वृषगिरीशस्य महिषीं दिव्यमङ्गलाम्। यस्याः कटाक्षवल्लर्यां विश्वमेतद् विवर्धते॥

I bow to the Queen of the Lord of Thirumala:, the supremely auspicious One, in the creeper of whose side-glance this entire universe grows and flourishes.

Meaning

The invocation of Maha:lakshmi: as the Mahishi: of Venkatesa. The Samprada:ya reads kata:ksha-vallari: (creeper of glance) as an exact theological term — the Mother's side-glance is not a mood or affect but the cosmic principle by which the universe is sustained. This verse establishes Dhaya: = Sri: = Mahishi: of the Lord.

दया देवीयं श्रीयते निवासे विष्णोरुरस्थलोपरि। यस्या वैभवविस्तारः सर्वलोकसुखाय कः॥

This Goddess Dhaya: dwells upon the breast of Vishnu Himself — and what is Her great splendour-of-expansion if not for the well-being of every world?

Meaning

The doctrinal heart of the Daya Sathakam: Dhaya: is not an attribute of the Lord but a Goddess — and that Goddess is Lakshmi:, dwelling on His chest. Her vaibhava-vistha:ra (expansion of glory) is identical with the cosmic order of compassion that sustains every being. This is the purushaka:ra doctrine restated as Dhaya:-theology.

Daya Sathakam concluding verse (phaliasruthi spirit)

एवं स्तुता मया देवी दया कमललोचना। सर्वलोकहितायैव प्रसन्ना भवतु प्रिये॥

Thus has the lotus-eyed Goddess Dhaya: been praised by me. May She — beloved consort of the Lord — be pleased, for the welfare of every world.

Meaning

The closing prayer: that the meditation on Dhaya:, who is none other than Sri:, may benefit not just the reciter but every being in every world. The verse encapsulates the Sri:vaishnava conviction that the Mother's grace, once invoked, never flows in only one direction.
